As layoffs and project cancellations continue across AAA development, experienced developers are increasingly starting small independent studios instead of searching for another big-studio job. Former MultiVersus leads Justin Fischer and Brock Feldman are bootstrapping Airlock Games with severance money and Kickstarter funding, deliberately keeping their first game small enough to ship without investors. Other AAA veterans are following a similar path, arguing that despite lower pay and higher failure risk, controlling their own budgets, scope and future can actually feel less risky than depending on an increasingly unstable AAA industry.

Romanian game studio Gacriva Technologies has developed Earth Renderer, an experimental rendering system built around mathematical 3D structures called “hopfions” rather than conventional pixels and triangle meshes. Gacriva claims tests have reached 800+ FPS rendering and 1,000+ FPS pipelines on a nine-year-old PC, while dramatically reducing visual data sizes. The technology grew out of the team trying to solve rendering problems for its own game, though GamesBeat notes the extraordinary performance claims still need independent validation.

Capcom is gradually evolving its RE Engine into “REX,” a collection of technologies designed to make development easier for both humans and AI. Rather than filling games with AI-generated assets, Capcom wants AI to assist with programming, graphics, sound, testing and repetitive development work. Longer term, the company envisions AI generating programs for specific tasks and even playtesting games to find bugs automatically.
