Games industry analyst Joost van Dreunen argues that gaming’s obsession with better graphics, bigger budgets and AI may be overlooking what players actually value: simple, affordable and social experiences. While AAA development costs have increased roughly 10× since 2000, board games and trading cards continue to grow. A Kantar study found that over half of consumers play board games monthly, with 73% saying they help them meet new people. The piece explores why meaningful human connection—not technological complexity—could be gaming’s next big growth opportunity.

A new Kasspian study of 394 indie games and 2,094 developer Reddit posts examines which marketing channels actually generate Steam wishlists. Among developers reporting results, 80% said demos helped, while Steam Next Fest received mixed reviews and 33 developers said short-form videos underperformed, versus just eight who named them their biggest source. Games with over 10,000 wishlists relied more on YouTubers, festivals and Steam discovery, while smaller titles found success through Reddit and press coverage. The study also found teams had 2,500 median wishlists versus 535 for solo developers, though its self-reported sample isn't representative of all indie games.

Hong Kong Joy Genesis is actively seeking to acquire completed Unity-based casual games and simulators, offering developers a potential exit even if their games have zero downloads or revenue. The company says it evaluates projects based on gameplay quality and commercial potential rather than existing performance. Acquisitions would include full ownership of source code, assets, IP and publishing rights, with games required to be finished and ready for release.

DayZ creator Dean Hall has open-sourced BRUTAL, a C# and Vulkan-based development framework built over four years at his studio RocketWerkz. Unlike a traditional game engine, BRUTAL provides the underlying systems developers need to build their own engines, including memory management, job scheduling, localization and native API access. The framework already powers Kitten Space Agency and helped form the foundation of RimWorld’s new Waylith engine, which delivers 2–4× performance improvements. Hall hopes it will give developers greater independence from Unity and Unreal.
